Before you apply
How much does a CSCS card cost in total?
The CSCS card application fee is £36 and is the same for every card colour. The CITB Health, Safety and Environment test is £23.50, having risen from £22.50 on 1 April 2026. Both are paid to CSCS and CITB respectively. Our service fee is shown at the top of this page and is charged on top. If you need a qualification you do not yet hold, such as an NVQ, that is a separate cost through a training provider.
How long does a CSCS card application take?
Once your CITB HS&E test is passed and your qualification is confirmed, the application itself is quick. On approval your digital card appears in the My CSCS app straight away, so you can start on site without waiting for the physical card to arrive in the post.
Do I need to pass the CITB test before applying?
Yes. Almost every CSCS card requires a current CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass dated within the last two years. There are different versions — Operatives, Specialist, Supervisory, and Managers and Professionals — and the one you need depends on the card you are applying for.
Which CSCS card do I actually need?
It comes down to your role and your highest construction qualification. No qualification and general labouring work points to the Green Labourer card. An NVQ or SVQ Level 2 points to Blue. Level 3 points to Gold. Management-level qualifications point to Black. Professional memberships point to White.
Can I renew a CSCS card that has already expired?
Yes. Cards can be renewed up to six months before expiry and for a period afterwards, provided your HS&E test is still valid within two years.
My card was lost or stolen. What do I do?
Apply for a replacement. You do not need to redo your qualification. Select Lost / Stolen on the application form.
Is a CSCS card a legal requirement?
No. It is not required by law, but almost every UK construction site requires a valid CSCS card before allowing access.
